Often times in our interactions with homeowners at some point the word resale is going to come up, it’s almost unavoidable. No matter if we are looking at countertop samples for replacement or plans full remodels, when I am asked "is this good for resale" I usually ask a question before answering - When do you plan on moving?
My thoughts on choosing a product based upon someone else liking it vary greatly depending on your answer:
If you’re planning on moving in less than a year, plan for resale. Spend the least amount on the biggest impact that you can still enjoy while you are still in your home. Don't spend more on something you love just to leave it for someone else, save it for you because the next person may not see the same value.
If your answer is sometime in the next five years, plan for both. Explore all we have to offer, we are here to educate you on all the products we carry. Consider the cost, life expectancy, up keep and care to keep it looking its best for whatever product you are considering. Choose something you will enjoy day in and day out that fits with your lifestyle so when you are ready to move its not only a selling feature but you have been able to appreciate it during the in between.
If you’re going to be here for the foreseeable future, it's all about you. Choose what you love and be happy every day you see it. The trend cycle for any product is changing much more frequently than it ever has, about every 7 years the next big thing will be everywhere. The likely hood that you could choose a product today that would be what most buyers are looking for in ten, fifteen or twenty years is unlikely. That's not to say that there are not timeless classics that never go out of style, there are. However, if a timeless classic is not your style why live with it?
My last thought on For you or For resale is always get the best bang for your buck, you should always feel good on any purchase you make.
